Book Review: Meditations on Violence, Rory Miller

Rory Miller has been Corrections Officer, a Sergeant, a Tactical Team member and a Tactical Team Leader who focuses on the mental aspects of self defense. This book challenges many of the misconceptions that we have as people that are shaped by our own experiences.

Millers focus in this book is to challenge your beliefs on how a fight will occur, how you will respond, and the viability of your techniques. He writes about how to break out of the cognitive "freeze", how to deal with different types of threats, and how the social dynamics can drive violence. This book is all about self awareness, and how to ensure that you are doing everything you can do to prepare for a violent encounter. His assessment and personal anecdotes give an insight into the mind of both officers and criminals, as well as how to assess your own readiness and abilities.
